My main projects focus on unveiling the triple-phase interface of catalyst layers, where the reactants, electrons, and ions from the electrolytes meet to render the sought products. The combination of fundamental and applied studies allows us to improve the half-cell oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by tuning the composition of the catalysts, ionomers, and solvent ratios.

On the one hand, as the scientific project leader of the federally funded "POREForm" consortium, my goal is to coordinate and improve the synergy between several research groups from high-ranking research institutes and universities in Germany and an industrial catalyst producer. The end goal of the project is to contribute to the commercialization of the next generation of carbon-supported Pt catalysts for high-performance polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) with higher efficiency and containing a reduced amount of active Pt, lowering the overall costs of PEMFC.

On the other hand, as a postdoctoral researcher, I implemented a new research line in collaboration with ICMOL (Valencia) to study NiFe catalysts' OER activity in alkaline media. This project aims to understand and translate the high activity of these materials from the fundamental studies to full-cell anion exchange water electrolyzers (AEMWE) to improve the performance of this relatively new technology.
